Walking groaning alpacas, watching tottering lambs and spotting swooping swallows.
We've been back to this farm a few times this year, including a couple of events, so this will be a bit of a mish mash post as I try to articulate what it is about Bishop's Court Farm that keeps bringing us back.
First, it's the lovely animals, especially the herd of 60 alpacas, goats, sheep, and pigs.
In March we walked alpacas for a mother's day event, which was wonderful. My alpaca (Roger) was a bit grumpy and didn't take to me much, but Little Leopard's (Daffy) was lovely and compliant and cheerful and Little Leopard was totally comfortable throughout.
It was a joy to discover that alpacas communicate by humming, although in Roger's case it sounded more like existential groaning, and I spent a lot of the 30 minutes unable to stop myself from telling him not to worry, and that everything was going to be fine.
Weekly nature adventures can hit painfully hard in the wallet, so I was delighted that they had an affordable mother's day session to book onto.
We also went to the lambing event in April which was well organised, with time slots so that it didn't feel too busy in the maternity wing barn. We got plenty of time to coo over little lambs stumbling and frolicking.
There was also a trail, and a chance to feed the alpacas and the goats, definitely Rafiki's highlight of the day was spotting and feeding some of the alpacas that we'd walked a month before.
I loved taking a stroll down by the lake, listening out for birds that we don't usually hear, and watching some swallows swoop and dive. (The first we saw this year). I also loved eating cakes fromthe cafe while listening to a talented singer as the sun finally peeked out from the clouds.
There are often family and music events happening, so it's worth checking out their website to see what's coming up.
Apart from the chilled, no-hassle vibe, I think one of the things I love about Bishop's Court Farm is its proximity to other nature adventures. It combines so well with Harcourt Arboretum, or a trip to Wallingford Castle Meadows.
But the most enticing possibility for me is a walk through the farm, past the animals and the lake, crossing the Thames and walking up to the Wittenham clumps. A true day out nature adventuring, filled with enough variety to fill up everyone's buckets.
Nature Notes
Alpacas
There are 2 types of alpaca. Huacaya which are fluffy like teddy bears, and Suri which have locks that drape down.
They don't have upper front teeth.
They rarely spit at humans.
A lovely community farm with lots of alpacas, regular events, and an abundance of wildlife.
